Ristorante L'Orto Stiloso in Albachiara, Fregene: A Quaint Restaurant at the Beach Outside Rome

It's summer! Once again, the days are longer and the heat is up. Since the kids are out of school, there's no better way to spend the idle days than to head to the beach. We live at the outskirt of Rome, along the Tyrrhenian coastline, so the beaches are very accessible to us. But  like the usual case, we don't go to the ones that are closest to us (straight ahead!) but we turn either left or right towards better beaches at 15 to 30 minutes both ways.

E' finalmente estate!

Growing up in an archipelago with 7,107 islands with tropical weather all-year round, I think I spent more than half of my life in the beaches. In the Philippines, you head either to the mall or to the beach. There are no cold months to speak of so there are 365 days (unless there's a storm) to get your gear and head to the sun and sand. So with so many islands, and days available for beach time, you almost don't see anyone in the beaches.

Because there are limited hot days in Italy to spend outdoors, everyone heads to the same place at the same time so the beaches tend to be packed. Summer is to take a break from the daily grind and head to the sea or the mountains. Then life recommences in September when the temperature has dropped a bit and city life seems more acceptable. For this reason, you can find the main cities quieter than usual with shops and restaurants closed in August.

But, I am here to speak about a surprising discovery just a few minutes from our house (to the right). There is a very nice beach place that's quite relaxing (a first for me here) with good food, wine, cocktails, friendly service and a whole stretch of sand that's not overcrowded with people, reclining chairs and umbrellas (another first for me). You know, the kind where you arrive at the entrance of the place, you look towards the water and the only sea you see is a sea of people. This place however, lets you see the real kind of sea and sand too! The whole atmosphere permeates relaxation and it evokes an invitation to step in.

Finding the place can be a bit tricky because unlike the other beach establishments that have the main entrances facing the road, this one has the entrance a bit hidden from the road.

Albachiara Beach is along the Lungomare of Levante in the town of Fregene, just 42 kilometers from Rome. There's a train that takes you there if you take the Roma-Pisa line. The town has a number of private summer beach houses usually owned by Romans because of its proximity to Rome. The town is maintained well, with clean beaches lining the coast.

Albachiara has both an open-air kiosk bar and a restaurant where you can enjoy the sea breeze and view. In the bar, you can order cocktails and snacks. It is open non-stop from morning until evening.

The open-air restaurant is called Ristorante L'Orto Stiloso, a cozy place where you can dine with contemporary dishes to explore. And here is where I would like you to join me in a gastronomic adventure that I truly enjoyed! Proprietor Anna Maria Piacquadio prepared lunch with an impressive series of plates to try.

For starters, we had some fried vegetables while settling down. They were light and easy to digest. Fried food is not so popular with health food watchers. I don't fry as much too but I believe that when frying, it has to be done at a certain high temperature so that the absorption of oil is minimal. And when you don't smell and taste the oil, aside from digesting the food well, then it is done perfectly just like this one.

To accompany our lunch, a local bio wine from Lazio is in order.  I have always trusted Vermentino to be fruity and a pleasant white to drink.

The appetizers came in different dishes: Tartare of sea bass, salmon and grouper (fish depends on the day’s catch) with fennel salad in citrus dressing. If there's raw fish, you will see my fork diving in, but always with caution because I believe that the fish has to be very fresh and of good quality to make an exemplary plate like this.

Another appetizer was: Farro and pearl barley salad with octopus, steamed shrimp, anchovies marinated with mint.  I use barley and farro often in my own kitchen so the presence of these two cereals served as a warm greeting to the palate.

Cod in “guazzetto” (sautéed with tomatoes) served with very thin crispy herb crostini. Guazzetto is an Italian term of cooking that I cannot translate perfectly. The closest description I can come up with is "sautèed in tomatoes and its own natural juices while cooking".

Anchovies in “baciate” (fried anchovies with Scamorza cheese and basil sandwiched in the middle). Baciate is literally translated to "kissed" but in this case, it doesn't seem apt to say kissed anchovies. Some things are still better kept as is.

Acciughe "baciate" (acciughe fritte con scamorza e basilico).

Sautèed mussels. A classic, but done in a very good way. I have to say that because I finished the whole bowl!

Soutè di cozze. Un classico, ma cucinato bene. Posso dirlo in quanto me ne sono mangiata un piattone!

When the appetizers finally finished arriving, we moved on to the primo or the pasta. There were two kinds, both diverse from each other, boasting the fresh ingredients they were cooked with and meriting words of compliment, especially the ravioli (top).  Cacio & pepe (Pecorino cheese & pepper) ravioli with eggplants, mussels, Pecorino cheese & tomatoes. Superb combination of flavors and quite tasty.  Anything after pales in comparison just like what happened to the next pasta. I should have eaten the trofie first because it has delicate flavors.

Dovete provarli!

Trofie with white ragout of sea bass, zucchini and bottarga (cured fish roe). Very good with subtle flavors of fresh fish and vegetables.

With that much food we tried, there was no more room for the secondo or the main course. But a good meal can't possibly end without a conclusion of a good plate of dessert (my favorite part!). On the plate were two delicious treats from their pastry chef. Dark chocolate cookie sandwich with cheesecake flavored gelato and a hand pie filled with ricotta, pear and vanilla cream on the side.

Entrambi buoni.

With the restaurant closed after lunch and the kids playing in the beach, I had the time to dedicate a bit of work at the bar. A glass of spumante and a fresh fruit skewer to accompany me and my computer in such a tranquil place was close to being spoiled, wasn't it? The sun and the sea have a natural way of lulling your senses. I realized that I needed to stop and enjoy what was gaping in front of me instead of staring at computer screen.

You see, I did close the computer and stash it somewhere while I explored the beach and  sipped the spumante and ate the fruit with the company of the proprietors. I listened to how they are running the place, how else they want to improve, further plans, cooking, how much time and effort is dedicated to what they do, and some random thoughts. I did realize what a gargantuan job is behind everything that I was seeing at that moment and that what they were doing was not just for the sake of business but also for the passion of doing things well and serving good food.
