The Beginning of a New Territorial Identity of Giusti Wines by Oenologist Graziana Grassini

“I chose Graziana (Grassini) for her combination of feminine grace, Tuscan dedication and international sensitivity. I came back to my homeland to give back some of the luck I got in my life, the result of years of commitment and sacrifice. My dream is that this little corner of Paradise, the Montello area, will become an international standard," says Ermenegildo Giusti.

Ermenegildo Giusti is an Italian - Canadian entrepreneur who owns Giusti Wines in Treviso, Italy. He returned to his native Treviso after having emigrated to Canada at a young age and where he founded Giusti Group, an umbrella group of seven companies dealing with construction in 1970s. In 2004, Giusti brought back an old family tradition in viniculture when he bought a 2 hectare land in the land to establish Giusti Wine. The land he purchased was from the original Dal Col vineyard, renowned for the traditional production of Prosecco, Bianchetta and Verdiso which was owned by his wife's family since the 1940s. At present, Giusti Wine has grown magnificently to an area of approximately 75 hectares with ten individual estates cultivating vines in the Montello area, along the Destra Piave municipality of Nervesa della Battaglia.

The goal of Ermenegildo is to highlight the great quality of Asolo Prosecco Superior and the red wines of Montello and with this, he decided to entrust the production to the most renowned Italian consultant oenologist, Graziana Grassini. Montello is located within kilometers from the Piave River and within the Piave Basin which have the sedimentary deposits from the Ice Age, a geological event that has created a unique terroir to the region. This is the first time that Graziana has accepted a consultancy role in the Treviso area and her objective is to produce wines that reflect the personality of its founder, Ermenegildo Giusti. The distinguishing features she is underlining are direct, immediate, captivating and original, wines that are destined to be appreciated not only in Italy but internationally as well.

Graziana Grassini is a Tuscan oenologist and biologist and considered one of the most prominent personalities in the world of international wines. After extensive studies in viticulture and oenology at the university, she obtained the title of Oneologist in 1994. She founded an analysis laboratory specializing in the oenological sector which became a technical reference for the Italian agri-food sector today. She collaborated with the renowned Giacomo Tachis, the father of modern Italian oenology from whom she inherited technical and humanistic knowledge. She is a consultant oenologist in a number of prestigious wineries in Italy as well as holding the title of President of the DOC Wine Tasting Commission of the Grosetto Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Organizzazione Nazionale Assaggiatori di Vino (ONAV), an authoritative association of wine tasters in Italy.

At an online tasting and discussion with both Ermenegildo and Graziana conducted by Gheusis Communication, the project towards a new identity for the Giusti wines was laid out. Graziana emphasized her belief in autochthonous grapes and paving the way to the best expression of the territory. She also disclosed her particular inclination towards white wines for their perfumes. At Giusti, she will be the interpreter of the territory and the philosophy of the company through her wines. The first wine in her consultancy will be the Asolo Prosecco in spring of 2021.

The two wines in the tasting were: Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG Extra Brut and Augusto Recantina Montello DOC 2017.

The Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG Extra Brut came from the vineyards of Montello and Asolo hills with red clay soil rich in iron. The Glera grapes were fermented with selected yeasts and produced through the Charmat method. The wine is brilliant and a straw yellow color with greenish hints. The aromas are intense dominated by white flowers and crispy white pulp fruits. In the mouth, there's a certain cleanliness with underlined acidity and notes of pears and peaches with a good persistence.

The Augusto Recantina Montello DOC 2017 instead was obtained from 100% Recantina grapes cultivated in Aria Valentina and Emily Vineyards of Montello with red clay soil rich in iron. After fermentation, the wine was aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for a period of 12 - 14 months. The full-bodied wine has a ruby red color with good transparency. The wine opens to rich varietal dark fruity perfumes of ripe plums, cherries and berries with a touch of violets. The nose opens up to more aromas of dried spices and forest ground. In the mouth it has a good acidity, smooth tannins and a long finish. This wine has continuously received high points from wine experts.
