Grilled Tofu with Teriyaki Sauce

How can you not avoid tofu in Asian cooking? I have a tug-o-war love with tofu. Sometimes, I cannot stand its texture and taste while at times, I cannot stop myself from eating everything in sight. There's nothing in the middle. It's either I love it or hate it. And the only reason for that is because of the way it was cooked and seasoned. I like them fried in this Fried Tofu & Pork With Vinegar Dressing (Tokwa't Baboy) and I like them sweet for breakfast in this Taho: Soft Tofu, Vanilla Syrup & Tapioca in a Glass.

And my ultra limited gastronomic love for tofu ends there. I think this is one reason why it is quite impossible for me to become vegetarian. I have to teach myself ways to enjoy eating tofu first then I can jump on the bandwagon of vegetable lovers. But let's add a third recipe to my list. When I made this out of leftover tofu, I was a changed woman. Three of my favorite recipes involve tofu. Now I cannot say that I have ups and downs in liking this soy bean curd because this simple recipe stays forever in my memory.

It is so simple to make and the teriyaki sauce plus the the grilled flavor together make it seriously delicious. Oh, and I wouldn't skip the thinly sliced onions, sesame oil and seeds too because they complete the dish. I love this, I really do! If you like tofu, try this one. If you want something sweet and tangy at the same time, try this Grilled Tofu with Homemade Plum Sauce.  It's also great! I hope you enjoy this and have a wonderful weekend!

Grilled Tofu with Teriyaki Sauce

Serves 2

Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons light honey
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 200 grams tofu, quartered
  • 4 long chives
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
Directions:
  1. Over low heat, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, honey and mirin and bring to a boil. While waiting for it to boil, in a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch and water until smooth. Pour it in the saucepan and whisk until the sauce thickens.
  2. Over medium fire, grill all the sides of the tofu on a hot griddle or grill.
  3. When the tofu are cooked, tie each one with the chive. If you don't want to do this, make it simple by just mincing some of the chives and sprinkling them on the tofu.
  4. Transfer the tofu to a serving dish, add the onions and sesame seeds then pour the teriyaki sauce. Drizzle the sesame oil.
