The Amalfi Lemon Experience of the Aceto Family's Terraced Lemon Groves

It's impossible to put into words how beautiful the Amalfi Coast is because its spectacular views of cliffs, the glistening sea and colorful houses on the hillside are meant to be admired by our own eyes and let them evoke emotions within us - especially when you go through the tight zigzag roads that go through the coastline that take you from town to town.

Amalfi is one of the area's most world-renowned towns explored by tourists for its beaches such as Lido Delle Sirene (Mermaid Beach) and Spiaggia of Marina Grande (Marina Grande Beach), the spectacular medieval square Piazza di Duomo dominated by the facade and stairs of the Duomo di Amalfi from the 9th-century and Via Lorenzo d'Amalfi, its main shopping road, lined with shops and restaurants that connects to the square.

If you step off the main hub and walk until the end of the main road (Via delle Cartiere), one of the most inspiring escapades at the edge of the town you can ever experience is taking a tour of the coast's most famous and oldest lemon producer for almost 200 years, the Amalfi Lemon Experience of Salvatore Aceto and his family. Here, you can take a tour of the terraced lemon groves with the organically-grown bright yellow lemons dangling from the trellised trees. Apart from that, you can also take part in cooking classes and dine under the trees.

The Aceto family has been growing lemons, a major cultivation in the Amalfi Coast, since 1825 which was started by Salvatore Aceto. He started with a small plot of land in the town of Ravello to start his trade. In the course of years and after six generations, they became the largest producer of lemons of the entire Amalfi Coast, wherein they started to climb their great success during the 1930s, especially in the international market. They produce a particular type of lemon called the Sfusato Amalfitano which is unique in the world for its qualitative and organoleptic qualities. The cultivation in their land is defined as Agricoltura Eroica or heroic agriculture because it requires a 'heroic' agricultural methods from the farmers and the plants themselves under extremely difficult environmental conditions.

Today's activity is handled by Salvatore Aceto, a first name given to him in honor of his ancestor who started the business in the 1800s. In 2013, his father Luigi handed him the family business and he took the business to an even higher level by organizing other activities such as the lemon tours, cooking lessons and dining. But most importantly, he started to promote the organic and sustainable production of lemons following the ICEA Certified Organic Agriculture guidelines.
