Torre Bisenzio in Umbria: Wine and Stay Experience in an Italian Wine Estate
Tasting wines couldn't have been as panoramic as the setting that husband and wife Mike and Neena Rees chose for their new tasting room in the middle of their 265-hectare wine estate in Umbria. A typical Umbrian stone building with two floors, the newest addition to Torre Bisenzio wine estate was celebrated with an inauguration of the new space on the 4th of October. Bottles of wine were lined up for the tasting of their five labels starting with their newest label, the limited production of the Torre Bisenzio Rosè Spumante Metodo Classico Brut Nature obtained from 100% Pinot Nero grapes.
Torre Bisenzio Bianco di Bisenzio 2020, a blend of 90% Grechetto and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, vinified in stainless steel and bottle-aged for a couple of months before its release to the market is a very pleasant crispy fruit and floral forward wine that expresses well the two varieties together. Then there's the Torre Bisenzio Ambris, 100% Sauvignon Blanc that was vinified in three types of containers: barrique, stainless steel and amphora. While the 2019 displayed complexity, concentration and evolution, the 2020 has struck a good reflection of complexity and elegance with pleasant tones of crispy green and mature tropical fruits. Torre Bisenzio Pugnalone Rosso Umbria IGT 2016, a blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah was aged in two different ways for the Sangiovese. A part went into second to third passage used oak barrels while the other part went into stainless steel for one year before being blended with the other varieties. It was further aged for one year in the bottle before its release to the market. A ruby red color, limpid and moderate intensity in the nose. Sweet violets are prominent followed by mature plums, black cherries, balsamic and blackberries. The dark stone fruits correspond in the mouth with pronounced minerality, notes of dry spices, smooth tannins, soft and long finish. The Torre Bisenzio Sangiovese IGT Umbria 2015 instead is made with 100% Sangiovese which were aged in second to third passage used oak barrels for one year followed by another year in the bottle before its release to the market. Deep ruby red with garnet red on the edges. It has a good intensity in the nose with a complexity of aromas. The violet is prominent with mature plums, black berries, wet forest floor, eucalyptus and dried tobacco leaves while it expresses the same in the mouth, good structure, ending with minerals, a hint of raisins and incense as it closes with a persistent finish. It’s an excellent wine that has a good expression of the territory and evolution of character from the varietal to tertiary.
Torre Bisenzio is a winery that's situated in Umbria, close to the border of Tuscany, the Monte Rufeno National Park and the renowned Chianti wine region. In 2003, when husband and wife Mike and Neena Rees purchased Torre Bisenzio Estate, they pictured a beautiful setting on where to set up their villas and vineyards, when in fact, they were facing a centuries-old building that was in a complete state of ruins. With patience and determination, they were able to restore it like how it was originally, combining the best of local materials with modern design and technology.
Putting value to biodiversity, the 265-hectare land
has a cultivation of 5 hectares of vineyards, 6 hectares of olive
orchards, and a farm where they breed Chianina cows amidst the
woodlands. Two rentable large villas, La Torre, a restored 13th century
building and Casa Bassa, a restored old farmhouse, has large suites,
swimming pools, gardens and incredible views of the vineyards and
countryside. Indeed, it is a great place to fully immerse yourself to
that dreamlike Italian countryside experience!
