Beviamoci Sud: Celebrating the Great Reds of Southern Italy in Rome


Brought to the capital by the agency of Riserva Grande with the collaboration of Luciano Pignataro and Percorsi di Vino, Beviamoci Sud, the first Festival of the Great Reds of Southern Italy came to life in the halls of Radisson Blu Hotel in Rome last on the first two days of February 2020. Wine producers from the southern regions of Italy namely Campania, Basilicata, Molise, Sicily, Calabria and Puglia, along with central Lazio, the hosting region, were present in showcasing more than 200 labels of their great reds in both days.


This new challenge came about after the successes of their two past editions of Aglianico in Rome in 2018 and 2019. This time, the two-day walk around and guided wine tastings focused on a wider scope by highlighting the excellence of southern Italy's variety of authochtonous grapes cultivated along with some international red varieties in its distinctively warm climate. Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Nero di Troia of Puglia while Aglianico, Lacryma Christi, Piedirosso are grown in Campania, Calabria's Gaglioppo, Tintilia of Molise and Sicily's Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese and Frappato.

The wine tasting underlined southern Italian's powerful red wines with mineral notes forged by volcanic soil and the warm sunny climate. Completely diverse from the red wines of other parts of Italy, the southern versions express their Mediterranean characters and strong complex personalities.
