Omina Romana Estate in Velletri (Rome), Italy

When Anton Börner first set foot on the land that was to become the future Omina Romana Estate, the thought of buying the land and plant grapes for wine production was immediate. So in 2004, the 80-hectare hilly terrain on the Alban hills in the town of Velletri has an elevation of about 250 meters went through a thorough process of viticulture. Long periods of studying and experimenting in the volcanic soil with predominantly of clayey with some sandy areas of the land led to the cultivation of grapes in more than 60 hectares of its area. With proper knowledge, right techniques, intense work and modern technology, Omina Romana was able to obtain excellent wines over the years.

The primary team behind the success of the Omina Romana wines is Dr. Maria Teresa Börner, the enologist, who is assisted by internationally renowned enologist Claudio Gori, who provides consulting services, and agronomist Paula Pacheco, who helps with the work in the vineyard and olive grove.

Eighteen different types of grapes were planted, twelve of which are red and six white. Petit Manseng, Chardonnay, Viognier, Tannat, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah are the international varieties while the local grapes are Bellone. Moscato, Manzoni, Montepulciano and Cesanese.

With the juicy grapes that grow in the vines, fermentation with controlled temperatures, the wines are left to mature for at least six months in the lees. The white wines are then aged in French oak barrique for half a year and subsequently allowed to mature in the bottle. The red wines on the other hand age for up to eighteen months in French oak barrique and an additional nine months in the bottle.

Omina Romana has a production of sparkling, white, rosè and red wines, as well as extra virgin olive oil. The wines have good structure and intensity expressing the characteristics of the grape varieties and terroir splendidly. From their sparkling wines made with Bellone grapes, sparkling rosè wines made with Syrah, to the Viognier and structured Chardonnay wines, all the way to the full-bodied red wines, Omina Romana is a producer that assures you of great quality.
