Haute Cuisine Blends with White Art at Family-Owned Casa Mazzucchelli in Bologna

Seventeen kilometers to the south of Bologna, one of northern Italy’s gastronomic and cultural cities, lies Sasso Marconi. Here, surrounded by a panorama of countryscape, the green hills of Bologna and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennins, sprawls Casa Mazzucchelli, an elegant relaxing structure that beckons you to go in and enjoy the hospitality of the Mazzucchelli family with siblings Massimo in the dining room and Aurora in the kitchen.

Formerly Ristorante Marconi that opened in 1983, the restaurant has always been known for its high quality kitchen. In fact it received its Michelin star in 2008. However in 2021, after the pandemic, they decided to follow another concept of kitchen leaning towards leavened cuisine and along with it came a new look and a new name, Casa Mazzucchelli.

Now, in 2023, they recount their family’s forty-year voyage from a family restaurant, a conquered star and a much defined identity of Aurora’s kitchen where haute cuisine and leavened white art come together in one dish. Behind every creation is a story of learned techniques and life-long experience in cooking while her brother Massimo complements her kitchen with his great knowledge in wine (which you can see from the cellar he keeps) and professionalism in the dining room.

Casa Mazzucchelli highlights the unmistakable unique style of Aurora which is the contemporary vision of catering of the family. It’s a one-of-a-kind tasting journey where textures, aromas and flavors are harmoniously combined in a tasting sequence that stimulates the palate from the starter to the conclusion with the dessert. And with this experience, the constant research, commitment, evolution and philosophy of the family are more evident, as it has always been the cornerstones the restaurant.

"A restaurant with a unique concept, an idea that cannot be found in Italy, in which food and wheat – understood like different types of bakery. They come together to offer a gourmet experience of excellence where the latter becomes an ingredient of the dish and of my recipes," says Aurora.

"An adventure that has our character, which combines professionalism, research, care and passion, channeling our experience into a unique journey, without omitting any detail and nothing that has always distinguished us," recounts the Mazzucchelli siblings.

"In my dishes I tell the link with the Emilian and Sicilian traditions that blend with the influences of many trips, where I really experienced the kitchen as a means of communication and meeting point," comments Aurora.

There are two tasting itineraries which offer the possibility to taste more combinations and with varying textures, aromas and flavors: the Attimi di Cucina (€70) with six courses of your choice; and the Momento Contemporaneo (€90), with seven courses plus a dessert. The à la carte menu consists of about twenty courses including appetizers (€25), first courses (€24), main courses (€28) and desserts (€15).

The wine list is enriched by an out of the ordinary cellar created over the years by Massimo, a sommelier and wine enthusiast, who has followed his personal selection process favoring small producers with natural ethics.
