I Migliori Vini Italiani 2017 di Luca Maroni in Rome, Italy

Between 16 to 19 February 2017, more than 600 wine labels, 160 gastronomic and oenological producers from all over Italy and thousands of visitors were in Salone delle Fontane in EUR, Rome for 4 days of wine tasting. It had been an incredible event that converged all food and wine enthusiasts under one roof celebrating the excellence of Italian creations. It is an annual event established in 2013 by Luca Maroni, a well-known Italian sensory wine analyst, where wines were tested according to his evaluating method of a series of sensory analysis that are based on three principles - Consistency, Balance and Integrity of the wines.

The quality of the wine is expressed with a vote of 100 which is equivalent to the Indice di Piacevolezza or Index of Pleasantness (IP). Ninety-nine (99) is the highest score that can be attained because one hundred (100) cannot be assigned to any wine because the perfect wine score goes towards infinity. IP 99 (Maximum) = Consistency 33 + Balance 33 + Integrity 33.

Naturally, it was humanly impossible to taste 600 wines (even if sometimes I wish I can) so choosing which ones that end up inside my glass was fundamental. Starting with the sparkling, to the whites, rosès, reds then dessert wines, my tasting route was a zigzag of random choices and some that were recommended by others. I also tried the wines that won awards after going through Luca Maroni's evaluation. My palate had an exciting moment of going through a sensory exercise too with evaluations of my own, and discovering new wines in the process.
