Icelandic Farm to Table at Eldhusid Restaurant in Gistihúsið – Lake Hotel Egilsstadir

Eldhusid Restaurant is located inside Gistihúsið – Lake Hotel Egilsstadir, a member of the Icelandic Farm Holidays. It is a family-run hotel owned by Gunnlaugur Jónasson, Hulda Elisabeth Daníelsdótti and their children. Although the hotel was built in 1903, the farm - guesthouse has been with Gunnlaugur's grandparents since 1889 where guests were already being accommodated. However, significant modernization and refurbishments to the structure were made from the time the present owners took over in 1997.

It is along the Ring Road or Route 1 in the town of Egilsstadir, the national road that circles the entire country so if you are taking a tour around Iceland by car, you will go through it. The fairly young town is located near the shores of Lake Lagarfljot, a beautiful lake made famous by its mythical serpentine aquatic creature, Iceland's version of the Scottish Loch Ness' Nessie.


Being housed in a meeting point for locals and visitors, Eldhusid Restaurant offers a broader scope of gastronomic fare ranging from Icelandic to international cuisines. There is particular attention to the quality of the raw materials and the precedence of the usage of organically-grown ingredients from local farms in support of the vicinal agriculture, most especially Austfirskar Krásir and Beint Frá Býli being in the forefront. There is keen attention to detail as evidenced by the meticulous plating of the dishes.

Menu

Apart from the individual entries in the menu, they offer the "From the Farm" tasting menu at €77 (11,490 Sk) consisting of 3 courses that feature the products of small farms in the vicinity such as the goat cheese from Lynghóll farm in Skiðdalur and the beef and skyr from farms in Egilsstadir. Fresh fish catch of the day are also included in the menu. Starters are between €15 to €23 (2,200 Sk to 3,400 Sk), main courses between €29 to €60 (4,300 Sk to 8,900 Sk) and desserts at €15 (2,190 Sk).
