The New Wines of Piandimare of Abruzzo: Villamagna DOC and Oltremare Pecorino

Piandimare came to life in 1986 when a few farmers wanted to cultivate unique vines to produce special wines. We are in Abruzzo, the central Italian region which borders the other regions, Lazio to the west, Marche to the north, Molise to the southeast and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The winery is located in Val di Foro, a valley nestled between the Majella and the Adriatic Sea where a unique micro-climate is created. Abruzzo is known to be the greenest region in Europe because almost half of its territory, which is comprised of the mountainous Gran Sasso d’Italia, is left untouched as a protected natural reserves and national park. The area is one of the most diversified in the region where the natural elements from the Adriatic coast, Alento and Foro rivers, the Majella mountain with its soft rolling hills and grassy pastures are fundamental constituents in creating quality wines that Piandimare is known for. The gentle sea breeze from the Adriatic Sea freshens and takes away the humidity from the vines, an ideal environment for the cultivation of the Montepulciano grape vines. While the winery is surrounded by south-oriented vineyards in the valley where the mountain and the sea meet.

From its conception in the eighties, Piandimare has grown into a bigger cooperative of around seventy producers with a renewed oenological perspective aimed for the excellence of the territory and the vines. Having oenologist Romeo Taraborrelli in the cellar gives a fundamental attainment of the wines’ identities.

Piandimare has recently launched two new wines in addition to the five previous labels that have been met with great enthusiasm. A red wine, Villamagna DOC dedicated to the Villamagna area with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grapes and a white wine of Percorino which joins the Oltremare line which is designed for easier drinking, mostly for the younger audience.

Oltremare Pecorino 2021
Having dedicated its wines to Montepulciano d'Abruzzo for all its wines, it's a first for Piandimare highlight one of Abruzzo's white varieties, the white Pecorino. Hand-harvested in mid-September, the grapes were pressed whole and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 3 months. Aged on fines lees for 3 months then a few more months in the bottle before its release to the market. In the glass, it presents a straw yellow color with green highlights. It has intensity and freshness in its framework of aromas which opens to the crispiness of white peach, tropical fruits, citrus notes, dried hay, herbs and yellow blossoms of acacia and daisies. The flavors parallel the nose with a bit of density, pronounced acidity, closing with a slight bitterness and long persistence.

Villamagna DOC 2019
It is with the arrival of the Villamagna DOC that Piandimare expands the line of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from the Piandimare massal selection to further demonstrate its potential in ageing and structure. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel for 6 months and maturation in small oak barrels for 12 months and another 6 months in the bottle before its release. Full ruby red in color, it has an intense and ample complexity in the nose which robust aromas of ripe black plums, black cherries, blueberries, chocolate, oak, dried tobacco, vanilla and a hint of salinity. Equilibrated with a muscular personality, polished tannins and marked elegance, as the flavors linger with the long persistence. With this wine, Piandimare has decided to take the path of orientation towards the international palate.
