Hosteria Grappolo d'Oro: Where Authentic Roman Cuisine at the Center of Rome Has Excellent Quality and Reasonable Prices

We all think that when a traditional restaurant is located at the very heart of the touristic center of a city, we tend to avoid it and look farther down the road. But with Hosteria Grappolo d'Oro, you can stop at their doorstep and swing that door open - with trust. In fact, it was recently added at the Michelin 2023 Guide. The restaurant is located in Piazza della Cancelleria, just a few steps from Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navona, a couple of Rome's most historic squares where hordes of tourists pass by.

A typical Roman hosteria, traditional dishes and typical local products from Lazio are the foundation of its kitchen which are based on seasonal and local products of small local producers and the Slow Food Movement. This came to life because there is a strong passion for Roman cuisine and good wine shared by the five partners behind Grappolo d’Oro: Edoardo Micozzi, Antonello Magliari, Andrea Liguori, Simone Angelucci and Luca Tenderini.

Depicting a genuine modern tavern, Grappolo d'Oro gives you a warm Roman hospitality with the staff's welcoming reception surrounded with original decorations depicting characteristic scenes of Rome. While on fine days, the outdoor area overlooking Piazza della Cancelleria in front of the Renaissance palace that houses the Tribunals of the Holy See is a beautiful setting for dining alfresco in the heart of the capital.

The Menu

The dishes created by Chef Antonello Magliari present a continuous balance between classic recipes and some modern reinterpretation while maintaining the very soul of the traditional cooking in Rome. The Percorso Romano or Roman Route Tasting Menu (€34) is an exemplary full menu for those who want to explore the Roman cuisine in four courses. This includes a trio of classic appetizers: panzanella (bread and tomato mixture); polpetta di bollito con salsa verde (boiled beef meatball); and baccalá mantecato (codfish mousse), a choice of a typical Roman pasta dish like spaghetti alla carbonara, rigatoni all’Amatriciana and tonnarelli cacio e pepe, a choice of a typical Roman main course: baccalá alla Romana (codfish in tomato sauce); agnello alla Romana (oven-roasted lamb); guancia di manzo brassata con Cesanese (beef cheek braised with Cesanese wine), a seasonal vegetable side dish, and a traditional homemade dessert.

While this menu is simply a brilliant offer in getting to know the Roman cuisine, there is also the à la carte menu to explore. The proposals depict the essence of the typical Roman kitchen including the iconic quinto quarto (fifth quarter or offal) recipes like the Roman-style tripe, coratella with artichokes, and sweetbreads with butter and sage. Also not to be missed are the fettuccine with black truffles, the meatballs in tomato sauce, seabass fillet covered in courgette or artichoke crust (depending on the season), beef cheek braised in Cesanese wine and to finish the meal with a maritozzo with cream or a cup of zabaglione with Marsala Vecchio Floro.

The prices are reasonable starting with the appetizers (€7 to €14) with an option of a platter of Mixed Appetizers at €18. The pasta dishes (€13 to €14), main courses (€16 to €19), side dishes (€5 to €8), and homemade desserts (€7). The wine list of Grappolo d’Oro focuses mainly on the different wine regions of Italy with special focus on the Lazio region’s offerings, some French bubbles, and a few from other wine producing countries.
